AdBlue Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Filter HQ now stock AdBlue Diesel Exhaust Fluid. AdBlue is something we are seeing more and more of in New Zealand. Nearly every new diesel vehicle & diesel machinery now require the use of AdBlue.
This fluid is automatically injected into the exhaust system to help reduce oxides of nitrogen emitted from vehicle or machine to meet the latest Euro 5 emissions standards. AdBlue is stored in a small tank and just like diesel fuel the driver must ensure that AdBlue is kept topped up in their vehicle.

Filter HQ now stock AdBlue in convenient sized containers of 10L, 20L, 210L & 1000L pods.

FREQUENTLY ASKED ADBLUE QUESTIONS
What happens if I run out of AdBlue?
If you run out of AdBlue while you're driving, then the engine's power and performance will be reduced to limit its emissions. Once you've stopped, you won't be able to restart the engine if the AdBlue tank's empty. The vehicle or machine will give you plenty of warning that the AdBlue tank's running low.
Is AdBlue only for diesel engines?
AdBlue is only applicable to diesel engines and is an emissions reduction technology that complements existing DPF technology. Diesel cars fitted with a DPF may not necessarily feature an AdBlue tank. However, vehicles with an AdBlue tank always feature a DPF as part of the overall emission control solution.
Does every diesel need AdBlue?
AdBlue should only be used in diesel cars fitted with an SCR system, so if in doubt consult the vehicle handbook. As a rule of thumb, the more recently the diesel car was built, the more likely it is to use AdBlue.
Can I use water instead of AdBlue?
You must not use water instead of AdBlue, or water down AdBlue in anyway. AdBlue is a mixture of urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. Where as tap water contains a lot of minerals and ions that is harmful to the vehicle exhaust treatment system.
How long will AdBlue last?
This all depends on the vehicle or machine and the size of the AdBlue tank. AdBlue consumption on average is 5% of the diesel fuel consumption. You will use approximately 5L of AdBlue to every 100L of diesel depending on the size of the engine.
Is all AdBlue the same or are there different types?
There are different names and brands for AdBlue, but it all contain the same solution of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionised water. AdBlue is simply a proprietary name but it all works the same no matter which brand it is sold by. It is best to check that it meets the ISO 22241 DIN70070 standard.
My engine wont start after running out of AdBlue?
If you run out of AdBlue your vehicle will not re-start after you turn off the engine. The AdBlue tank will need to be refilled with a minimum of 3-5 litres of AdBlue before the vehicle will start.
Can you mix diesel and AdBlue?
AdBlue is commonly mistaken as a fuel additive when it is actually an exhaust fluid that should never be mixed with diesel. AdBlue has its own tank and is stored completely separately to your vehicle's fuel. Adding AdBlue into your diesel fuel tank can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Does AdBlue expire?
AdBlue can last up to 24 months if stored correctly. To keep Adblue optimal we recommend that it is stored out of direct sunlight and at a temperature between -6°C and 25°C. Adblue can start to degrade in quality over time even if it hasn't reached its expiration date. Signs that Adblue may have gone bad include a change in colour, a change in smell, or the formation of crystals or particles.
What happens if I use old AdBlue?
It is possible that using expired AdBlue can very quickly corrode all components and pipework within the engine. You must drain the tank immediately and dispose of all contaminated fluid appropriately. Do not tip down the drain.
Is AdBlue harmful?
AdBlue is non-toxic but it can be corrosive and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and lungs. We do not recommend drinking it, however if this happens drink plenty of water and seek medical attention. Wear gloves and wash your hands after filling. If AdBlue comes into contact with your vehicle or machines paintwork, rinse the area with water. Any spills can be cleaned with water.
